Once the Christians and Pagans started feuding, the Christians tried to do away with anything the heathen Pagans believed in. If Pagans believed that a black cat would bring one good luck, then, obviously, it would bring you bad luck - because Pagans were devil worshipers, and everything they did was an abomination. These were also the same people who knew that the world was flat...Weird times.
