Should long-time bachelor “roommates” Bert and Ernie tie the knot?

LGBT activist Lair Scott thinks so, and he has created on online petition on Change.org which requests that Sesame Street and PBS allow the pair to wed. According to the petition, such a matrimony would help teach kids that homophobia is not OK.

So far the effort has garnered about 5,000 electronic signatures, and its corresponding Facebook page has about 2,500 fans.

But don’t expect to see a same-sex Muppet wedding anytime soon, as PBS has already released a statement dismissive of the idea.

“Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.  Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets™ do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.”

Shucks, we were so excited to see Rubber Duckie do best man duty.
