UNDATED (AP) —Rick Nash had a goal and assist in the first period, and Ryan Callahan had a pair of assists as the New York Rangers hung on to eighth place in the Eastern Conference with a 6-1 victory over the Florida Panthers. Mats Zuccarello scored twice for the Rangers, who are tied with Winnipeg for the final playoff slot in the East. New York has a game in hand.

The playoff-hopeful Rangers have won six of nine.

In other NHL action:

— John Tavares had two goals and an assist as the New York Islanders rallied past Toronto 5-3 and moved within two points of the Maple Leafs for fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

__ Montreal captain Brian Gionta (JAHN'-tah) scored a late-power play goal to give the Canadiens a 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay. That moves the Habs two points ahead of Boston in the Northeast Division race, although the Bruins have two games in hand on Montreal.

— Kyle Turris scored twice and the Ottawa Senators ended Washington's winning streak at eight games with a 3-1 victory over the Capitals.

__ Winnipeg outlasted Carolina 4-3 in overtime to move within two points of the Southeast Division-leading Capitals. Dustin Byfuglien (BUHF'-lihn) scored 1:23 into overtime for the game-winner.

__ New Jersey snapped its 10-game winless streak with a 3-0 whitewash of Philadelphia. The Flyers are 2-5 in their last seven games. Martin Brodeur (mar-TAN' broh-DYOOR') got his 121st career shutout with 23 saves. The Devils are eight points out of the final playoff spot with five games left.

__ St. Louis moved closer to a playoff berth with a 3-2 win over Phoenix. Blues goalie Brian Elliott stopped all three chances in a shootout for the second straight game.

— Cody Eakin, Jamie Benn and Ray Whitney scored goals early in the third period to break open a tie game and help the Dallas Stars cruise to a 5-1 victory over the Vancouver. Dallas is tied with Detroit, two points out of the final playoff berth in the West.

__ Logan Couture (kuh-CHUR') and Martin Havlat each scored twice and the San Jose Sharks helped their playoff positioning by beating Minnesota 6-1.

__ The L.A. Kings beat Columbus 2-1. Drew Doughty notched his sixth goal.
