You can watch history come to life this weekend as the “6th U.S. Infantry” comes to the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center Saturday, June 17 through Sunday, June 18.

Colorado-based living historians with the 6th U.S. Infantry will be re-enacting an authentic 1860s field encampment on the grounds of the NHTIC. You can talk with soldiers in period clothing and learn what life was like for Civil War era infantrymen stationed on the western plains.

According to the press release:

"The 1860s was a decade of rising tension on the plains, particularly along the historic trails. The Sand Creek Massacre in southern Colorado allied the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho, culminating in several decisive engagements against the U.S. military. Government commissioners sought peace through treaties at Fort Laramie. However, tensions remained high for years to come."

You can find the living historians Saturday, June 17 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, June 18 from 8 a.m. to midday. The event is free and open to the public.
