Though perhaps without the ratings or critical attention of original series successor 'Bates Motel,' A&E's 'Longmire' has continued to perform for the network, recently wrapping up its sophomore season. Cast and crew have reason to cautiously celebrate today, as 'Longmire''s executive producer has announced that the Wyoming-set sheriff drama will return for a third season next year, though A&E isn't trumpeting the renewal just yet.

Executive producer John Coveny took to Twitter today to cut and dryly announce "Thanks to the 5 million plus weekly fans (live+7). Young and older skewing alike! The call just came: SEASON 3 for #Longmire is a GO!" However, A&E representation would not yet comment on the news, and insiders say Coveny prematurely announced the renewal before finalized deals could be put in place.

Longmire's highest ratings of the season extended to about 4.4 million total viewers, 1.1 million in 18-49 and 1.5 million in 25-54 for the recent final. A&E will very likely renew given such numbers, though it may negotiate for partial ownership of the series in season 3.

For those unfamiliar with the series, based on the book by Craig Johnson, 'Longmire' follows Sheriff Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) of Absaroka County, Wyoming, who returns to work following the murder of his wife. Also starring in the series is Katee Sackhoff ('Riddick'), Lou Diamond Phillips, Bailey Chase, Cassidy Freeman and Adam Bartley.

Official confirmation of 'Longmire' season 3 will be forthcoming, but what say you? Are you happy to see Walt & co. back for another year in 2014? Get up to speed with the video below, and give us your thoughts in the comments!
