Sammy Hagar is speaking very highly of his former band-mate Ronnie Montrose, who passed away on Saturday.Montrose passed away at his home in California after a long battle with prostate cancer and Sammy is heaping praise on his close friend.

"Ronnie Montrose gave me my first break as a songwriter, as a frontman, as a recording artist, as a touring artist, and for that I will always be grateful.

Sammy will celebrate his 65th birthday later this year and revealed he was planning to meet Montrose and ex-bandmates Denny Carmassi and Bill Church for a celebration.

"I was looking forward to a reunion for my birthday bash in Cabo with Denny, Bill and Ronnie - one of the few bands from that era where all four original members were still able to do it. It's a shame to lose Ronnie and I'm so sorry for his loved ones. Rest in peace."
