Evanston police on Tuesday arrested a city council candidate on over a dozen child pornography charges.

Maurizio Roberto Mariotti was booked after police officers executed a search warrant earlier Tuesday, according to a statement from the Evanston Police Department. Mariotti arrested on five recommended charges of manufacturing child pornography and 10 recommended counts of possession of child pornography.

The case has been investigated since the spring of 2018, following a report from the female victim, who is now an adult.

The department's investigation division worked the case and compiled evidence along with the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation's Internet Crimes Against Children Division.

According to the police statement, charges were to be filed through the Uinta County Attorney's Office.

Chief Deputy Rowdy Dean of the Uinta County Sheriff's Office told K2 Radio News on Tuesday that Mariotti would likely make his initial court appearance on Wednesday morning.
