When I was young, I always wanted to be Batman. He was absolutely the coolest guy. I realized, very shortly, that it was basically impossible to be Batman. For some reason, however, I still always daydream about being certain movie characters. Whether it’s because they’re super cool, super tough, or get to save super hot girls; anytime I watch a movie I take at least a few minutes to pretend that I’m the main character. With that in mind, I’ve compiled a list of the top 10 movie characters I would want to be.

#10- Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker in The Fast and the Furious)

I saw this movie with two of my cousins when it first came to the theatres and I thought that Brian O’Connor was the coolest guy in the world. He was the coolest of the cool, a modern day Fonzie. He wore jeans, t shirts, and converse. He had cool hair, cool facial hair, and knew how to fight. He was smooth with the ladies AND drove some really cool cars. He was loyal to his friends to, as those who have seen the movie can attest to. Most people who have seen this movie like Vin Diesel’s character more. Not me. I will always be a fan of Brian O’Connor.

#9- Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man)

I was never a big Iron Man fan. Truth be told, I never much got into any of the Marvel super heroes. Don’t get me wrong- I loved The Avengers and all of movies that prefaced it. But Iron Man, Captain America and the crew were never my favorites. Who I did love, however, was Robert Downey Jr’s portrayal of Iron Man’s secret identity- Tony Stark. 100% credit of this goes to Downey’s performance, but there was just something about Tony Stark that mesmerized me. He was rich. He was smart. He was good looking. He was narcissistic. He was everything that I want to be in my life. Oh! And he was also a super hero at night. Is there anything cooler than that?

#8- Dr. Frank N’ Furter (Tim Curry in Rocky Horror Picture Show)

Don’t laugh! I know this seems like an odd choice, but there is a method to my madness. Taking away all of the…eccentric…characteristics that Dr. Frank N’ Furter has, this dude has an attitude and a zest for life that we can only imagine. His anthem, Sweet Transvestite, shows a man that obviously enjoys the life that he is living. His mantra is “Don’t dream it, be it.” Isn’t that the best piece of advice we could ever receive?

#7- Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean)

This character epitomizes the word cool. He dresses awesomely, always has a witty one-liner, can sword fight, and he always gets the hottest wenches. The adventures that Jack Sparrow has been on are the stuff of legends. His stories have inspired millions. His facial air can make a grown man weep. There is nothing that isn’t cool about Jack Sparrow. Except, ya know, the latest sequel.

#6- Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling in Crazy, Stupid, Love)

This guy is the cat’s meow. He’s young, successful, good looking and rich. He has abs that look “photoshopped.” He wears the finest suits. More than anything else, however, the reason Ryan Gosling’s character is on this list is because he gets to hook up with Emma Stone. End of story.

#5- Dylan Harper (Justin Timberlake in Friends with Benefits)

Dylan Harper is living my dream life. He’s a former webpage designer who lands a job as art director for GQ magazine. He moves from LA to New York City and lives in an amazing apartment. His family has a beach house. He has cool clothes.  And, best of all, he gets to continually hook up with Mila Kunis, without any of the emotions that come with sex. Dylan Harper, beyond a shadow of a doubt, is one movie character that I absolutely wish I could be.

#4- Jeremy Grey (Vince Vaughn in Wedding Crashers)

Jeremy Grey is a 30-something that has a pretty ok job as a Mediator. His real passion, however, is ladies. He and his friend John are wedding crashers, and they are a master of their craft. They show up at weddings, pick out the girl they want, and then set about getting her from the reception to the bedroom. In the meantime, they eat and drink for free, dance wildly, and have the time of their lives. When they get the ladies home, they sleep with them, give them some excuse as to why they can’t ever see these girls again, and move on. Is this the perfect life or what? Bonus- Jeremy ends up with a crazy, hot red head which is my absolute favorite kind of girl.

#3- El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas in Desperado and Once Upon A Time In Mexico)

Pop Quiz- What’s cooler than a Spaniard who plays the guitar? A Spaniard that plays a guitar that has a gun on it. Antonio Banderas’ portrayal of “El Mariachi” (The Mariachi, in English) is one of the coolest movie characters in the world. He’s a musician that travels the streets of Mexico, strumming his six-string and shooting up bandejos. He hooks up with Selma Hayack and has his own posse. Words cannot even do justice to how cool this movie character is. Just watch it, and be impressed.

#2- Gil Pender (Owen Wilson in Midnight in Paris)

There is really nothing exceptional about the character of Gil Pender in the movie Midnight in Paris. Rather, it is the things that happen to him that make me want to be him so much. Pender is a writer who is vacationing with his bitchy fiancé in Paris. Really, just the fact that he’s a writer spending time in Paris is cool enough. But then, one night as Gil is taking a walk, the clock strikes midnight and a car leads Gil on the adventure of a lifetime. He somehow travels back to the 20’s (which, if you know anything about literature, really was the “golden age” of writing) and meets such luminaries as Ernest Hemmingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Picasso. He also meets and falls in love with Marion Cottilard, which in and of itself is worthy of putting him on this list. As a writer myself (albeit mostly of articles like this one), this is truly my dream-life. Somehow spending a night or two in Paris, in the 20’s, with some of the most incredible artists that have ever lived- it truly would be a dream come true.

#1- Seth Gecko (George Clooney in From Dusk Til Dawn)

This is the movie character that inspired this article. While watching From Dusk Til Dawn, I found myself being drawn less to the story (which, believe me, is absolutely genius), and more to the character of Seth Gecko, played by George Clooney. Gecko is a fugitive on the run, broken out of jail by his brother. His goal is to get to the border, where he can collect money that is owed to him, and then live on a beach for the rest of his days. Make no mistake; Gecko is not a “good guy.” He’s a killer, and a thief. But there is just something about this character that really intrigues me. He’s loyal. He’s fair (as in, he won’t kill you unless he has to). He’s tough. He’s cool as a cucumber and he will not hesitate to fight you if you cross him, even knocking out his own brother when he became too annoying. Seth Gecko makes being a criminal cool, much like Pacino and De Niro have done before him. In short, Seth Gecko is the coolest movie character I have ever seen.
