Wyoming Trooper’s Patrol Vehicle Hit Near Casper

A Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper was not injured Tuesday night when his patrol vehicle was hit near Casper.

The trooper was "stopped out" with another vehicle on Highway 258 near mile post nine at roughly 8:20 p.m., when his vehicle was hit.

That collision caused the trooper's vehicle to hit the back of the vehicle the trooper was stopped with. The trooper was outside his vehicle at the time, and wasn't hurt.

It's unclear whether the trooper was engaged in a traffic stop or assisting a motorist, but Sgt. Kyle McKay said the trooper was performing his duties.

Also unclear is whether anyone else involved in the incident was injured. The Natrona County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the incident, was unable to provide further details Wednesday afternoon.

No word on whether anyone has been arrested or cited in connection with the crash.

The Patrol highlights Wyoming Statute 31-5-224, which requires drivers to slow to a speed 20 mph less than the posted speed limit and, on two-lane highways, merge into the lane farthest from a stopped emergency vehicle.

The statute, commonly referred to as the "slow down/move over" law, has been in place since 2001. Any violation is punishable by a citation of up to $235.
