They've been called "The Greatest Generation" of Americans. The term "The Greatest Generation" originated from Tom Brokaw's 1998 book of the same name. In the book, Brokaw wrote, "it is, I believe, the greatest generation any society has ever produced." He argued that these men and women fought not for fame and recognition, but because it was the "right thing to do."The Wyoming Veterans Memorial will observe the 70th anniversary of D-Day, Saturday, June 7th from 9am-5pm, at 3470 Jourgensen Avenue. Admission is free.

To commemorate this momentous event, the Wyoming Veterans Museum will open a D-Day spotlight exhibit on June 6, 2014. This exhibit will remain on display through the end of September. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Every visitor will receive a ticket for a door prize to be awarded at the end of the day. This is a high-quality reproduction “Cricket” a distinctive signaling device issued to American paratroopers for the D-Day jump. This reproduction brass Cricket has been manufactured at the historic WWII factory in Birmingham, England, using original machines and dies. It is a $30.00 value. During the entire day, the museum will present D-Day themed movies free to the public in our newly renovated multi-purpose classroom, complete with hot-buttered popcorn!

Adhering to the historic chronology of the invasion, between 9:00 and 11:00 in the morning we will present the “Band of Brothers” episodes “Day of Days” and “Carentan” portraying the 101st Airborne Division in Normandy. At 11:00 a.m. the museum will present a brief lecture by a World War II veteran, commemorating the events of this momentous day. Between noon and 3:00 in the afternoon the museum will be presenting the acclaimed 1962 Academy Award winning movie “The Longest Day.” Finally, at 3:00 in the afternoon the iconic 1998 Academy Award winning movie on the invasion of Normandy, “Saving Private Ryan” will be aired.
