You’ve Seen It, But Do You Know About It?
Coming back to Wyoming after my trip to Denver, I saw this formation of rocks that flanks both sides of I-25 just south of the border between The Cowboy State and Colorado. Even though it is in Colorado, it always makes me feel like I'm back home when I see it.
I believe it is called "Natural Fort," and at one time, was a rest stop for highway travelers there. Earlier, in 1834, there may have been a battle between the Blackfoot and Crow Indians, according to the biography of James Beckwourth. He also said it was a scene of bloody carnage and that, after making a diversion on one side, and then attacking from the other, the Crow lost about 40 warriors and the Absaroke Crow, inside the formation, were wiped out.
Here's a satellite view of the formation.
