Simple Steps To Keep Your Vehicle Safe In Wyoming
One of my worst fears is coming out of my house and finding that my truck has been stolen. I have a deep attachment to the old F150; we've been on many trips and created many memories together.
Luckily, having your vehicle stolen is less likely in Wyoming than in most states nationwide. This is another excellent reason to live in the Cowboy State.
A new study from Compare The Market's research of the National Insurance Crime Bureau, Wyoming only has one of the lowest levels of car thefts nationwide.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a car is stolen every 37 seconds in the US.
There are only 132 vehicle thefts per 100,000 people. That doesn't mean you should leave your keys in your car and gamble that it won't be taken, but you don't need to worry as much as our friends to the south, in Colorado.
Colorado leads the pack with 731 vehicle thefts per 100,000 people, totaling 42,706.
The NHTSA says there are simple steps you can take to lower the likelihood of your ride being stolen.
- Take your keys out of your vehicle.
- Close and lock all windows when you park.
- Park in well-lit areas.
- Never leave valuables in your car, especially if they are in plain sight.
Seems straightforward, right?
If you're still worried your wheels may be snatched, you can take further steps to comfort yourself. For example, you can add an alarm system, an immobilizing device to keep potential thieves from bypassing the ignition or hotwiring your car, or a vehicle recovery system.
You should know your car's vital information in case your vehicle gets stolen.
- License Plate Number
- Make, Model, and Color
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- Insurance Company and Policy Number
- Any identifying marks or characteristics that will help in the search.
As technology in vehicles advances, so does the abilities of potential thieves. You can go above and beyond to keep from being a statistic.
