I've heard stories of things caught on a rod and reel, things like boots and tires.  But what we pulled out of the North Platte River was a first for me and maybe you too?

While taking a few minutes at the end of day, I headed with a couple friends to the North Platte River to squeeze in a quick fishing trip.  The bite was slow as the sun was setting, it was so beautiful and peaceful.  That's when there was a big tug on the fly line!  About time!!

But in bringing in what we thought might be a huge fish, there was no fight at the end of the line.  Dang it!  It was probably a clump of moss or a tree branch, my initial thought.  Only thing I did know was that it wasn't a fish.  As the object at the end of the line rose to the surface, I thought the fly had hooked into a beaver or maybe an otter (although game and fish will tell you there are no otters in the N.Platte River).   But upon a closer look, and again a lack of a fight, we quickly realized it wasn't either of those animals as well.  But what was it??

As it got closer to the shore, I could smell it and it was certainly a dead animal.  Took me a minute to identify it in the fading light... but there it was... it was a chicken!  Not sure how it got into the N. Platte River, but I can tell you this - it was disgusting!!

We all had a big laugh and then took a couple of pictures.  Instantly I started singing Kip Attaway's Fishing for Chickens and still have that song stuck in my head!
