2012 World Series: Giants Sweep Tigers With 4-3 Extra-Inning Win

Marco Scutaro’s line drive single scored Ryan Theriot with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Detroit Tigers, 4-3, on Sunday night in Detroit to complete a four-game sweep of the 2012 World Series. The victory gave the Giants their second world championship in three years.

Theriot singled off Tigers’ relief pitcher Phil Coke to start the 10th and was sacrificed to second by Brandon Crawford. Angel Pagan struck out before Scutaro’s clutch hit off Coke delivered the eventual game-winning run. Sergio Romo struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th, getting Triple Crown-winner Miguel Cabrera looking to end the game and the series.

San Francisco catcher Buster Posey’s two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning had given the Giants a 3-2 lead, but Detroit’s Delmon Young hit a solo homer in the bottom of the frame to tie the game.

San Francisco third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who tied a World Series’ record with three home runs in Game 1, was named the Series’ Most Valuable Player. He hit. 500 (8 for 16) over the four games.
