Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry Meet President Obama
While returning to the U.S. after a long South American tour, the plane carrying Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry was delayed due to the arrival of President Barack Obama in Orlando, Fla. However, they wound being invited onto Air Force One and spending a few minutes with the president.
"Joe and Steven hanging out with President Obama on Air Force One today in Orlando Florida," the band's official Twitter account sent out last night, along with a picture of the three of them.
“We were stacked up over Lakeland [Florida], while his plane landed,” Perry told Vanyaland, still buzzing from the encounter. “We were trying to get in before him but we missed. Then, while we’re sittin’ on the runway, we’re lookin’ at Air Force One and we got out, took some pictures and the next thing you know, we’re on the plane being given a tour. Then Obama heard we were there on the plane and he said, “If you wait ’til I get there, we’ll do a little meet and greet.” So we ended up talking with him for a couple minutes, getting some pictures...
Although Tyler had met Obama before, in 2010 when Paul McCartney was awarded the Kennedy Center Honor, it was the first time Perry had met a sitting president. He noted that, given their history as the Toxic Twins, being at a point in his life where this could happen was "pretty flipped out."
"The ‘Bad Boys from Boston’ you know?" he continued. "Steven and I have had some pretty cool adventures, but this one is right up there. ...In the ’70s we couldn’t get anything but arrested. Now it’s like, were so respectable.”
Perry has long identified as an "old-school Republican," but the difference in parties, even during an election season, didn't matter to him. "He’s pretty amazing, you know?" Perry said. "Being a Republican, I still have a lot of respect for the office, you know? Sitting there with the Commander-in-Chief and leader of the free world… it was really cool.”
The two Aerosmith members were returning to the U.S. on Tyler's private plane. Tyler has a solo concert in support of his country album, We’re All Somebody From Somewhere, in Orlando on Monday.
