Cowboys Battle Past Air Force [VIDEOS]
The Wyoming Cowboys sent their seniors out on a high note with a hard fought 66-54 victory over Air Force Wednesday night in Laramie.
A pair of second half surges helped Wyoming pick-up their 10th league victory.
Senior Louis Adams scored eight straight to put the Pokes ahead 54-45 with 8:52 left. Air Force answered with six straight and cut it to 54-51 at the 5:52 mark. Four free throws by senior Hayden Dalton, and a lay-up by senior Alan Herndon off a pass from Dalton pushed the UW lead back to 60-51 with 4:08 remaining.
The Cowboys finally took a double figure lead on a three by senior Alexander Aka Gorski with 2:07 left. That gave them a 63-51 advantage. Another three by Cody Kelley with 1:39 left sealed it.
Wyoming (19-11, 10-7) shot 43 percent for the game. Junior Justin James led the way with 18 points, while Dalton and Adams added 12 apiece. The Pokes got 10 three-pointers by six different players. They did have 15 turnovers, but also got 12 steals.
Air Force (11-18, 5-12) was led by Ryan Swan with 13 points. The Falcons shot 39 percent from the field. They did out-rebound UW 39-31, but also committed 19 turnovers.
The four Cowboy seniors, Adam, Aka Gorski, Dalton and Herndon were honored on the court prior to the game. All four had their families in attendance. That included the Aka Gorski family that traveled 17 hours and 4,834 miles one way to see Alex play. It was just their second time seeing him play in a Wyoming uniform.
The 66 points were the fewest scored by the Pokes in a victory this season, while the 54 allowed were also the fewest given up this season.
Wyoming finishes the regular season with a game at Boise State Saturday at 5 p.m. The Cowboys have a chance to finish in the top five and receive a first round bye in the Mountain West Tournament next week in Las Vegas.
