Extreme Cold Expected Across Wyoming in the New Year
The first week of 2017 is expected to bring bitterly cold temperatures to much of Wyoming.
Folks in Casper will be fortunate to see a high temperature of 0 F on Tuesday, with Wednesday's high likely dipping to -1 F.
Riverton will probably be in worse shape, with a forecast high of -3 F Tuesday and -1 F Wednesday.
The National Weather Service says an arctic cold front will move through the state Sunday night. Frigid air is expected to remain all week, making for several days with high temperatures in the single digits above or below zero.
Low temperatures in the neighborhood of -10 F to -20 F are expected, while central basins could see -30 F at times and the Upper Green River Basin could sink to -40 F.
And if that's not enough, mostly light snowfall is expected in western Wyoming on Sunday and across the state on Monday.
Places such as Casper, Cody, Buffalo and Rock Springs will probably see the worst of the prolonged cold spell.
As of noon on Friday, Dec. 30, Casper will see a 50 percent chance of snow on Sunday night and Monday night.
Monday's forecast calls for a high of 11 F with a 60 percent chance of precipitation in the Oil City.
But conditions will be unforgiving beginning Tuesday, with a nighttime low temperature expected to hit -9 F. Wednesday's low temperature is expected to be -9 F as well.
That should make Thursday feel like a day at the beach, with the high temperature expected to shoot all the way up to 2 F.
Be sure to dress appropriately and make sure your pets have someplace warm to spend the nights.
