PODCAST: Bizarre Border War Up Ahead?
LARAMIE -- This is going to be a bizarre Border War, isn't it?
That 24-21 loss at Air Force last Saturday in Colorado Springs was nothing short of deflating. With a chance to go ahead in the fourth quarter, Wyoming (3-4, 1-2) got fancy at the goal line and instead of pounding the ball in the end zone, instead opted for a pass ... from a tight end ... who also happens to be the quarterback who was benched last year.
You couldn't write a worse script.
Colorado State (2-5, 1-2) limps into this 117th edition of this rivalry off a 31-19 setback at home against Hawaii in front of the largest crowd in the brief history of Canvas Stadium. That miserable outing comes on the heels of a four-touchdown blowout of heavily-favored Fresno State.
That should've been the Rams' only victory of the season. (ahem Northern Colorado)
Either way, it ultimately cost head coach Jay Norvell his job.
The unforgivable interception -- and the one that followed that -- at the Academy was also the final straw for Wyoming head coach Jay Sawvel, who demoted his offensive coordinator less than 24 hours after the final whistle. Jay Johnson will remain on staff as an analyst and Jovon Bouknight will take the reins of a unit that averages just 20 points per game.
CSU has tapped its defensive coordinator Tyson Summers to lead that team over the final five games of the regular season. The visitors will also have a new playcaller Saturday. That man is Grant Chesnut, the tight ends coach.
What can we expect from these two programs, both desperate for a win -- and to take home the coveted Bronze Boot -- this Saturday night inside War Memorial Stadium?
