How the first day of school goes for your kids can set the pace for the rest of the school year. You've probably been a little more relaxed on sleep and eating schedules, and being a little more lenient on screentime rules, but that's all out the door with school starting.

Getting the kids and parents on a schedule is key to making mornings move more smoothly, but where do you begin? If you're just now starting, it may be a rough first day, but you can get the ball rolling in the correct direction.

Going back to school was always an exciting time for me. I'd get a new first-day outfit, new shoes, and a backpack full of new supplies, and I was ready to go. Now, for me, that's where the school excitement ended, but that's not the same for every kid.

With just a few days before the actual first day, here are a couple of tips that I still use today that may help you out.

  • Get strict with the bedtime again - Kids need a lot of sleep to support their learning. Getting on a consistent schedule will help get them geared up.
  • Lay out the morning routine - Having clothes, shoes, backpacks, supplies, and even lunches packed the night before will help with the morning process. I do this still today, and it makes my morning go smoothly.
  • Have a place for homework and studying - I'm a person who needs a dedicated space to retreat to when working on projects. Having this workspace helps me focus on the work I need to get finished.
  • Write it down so you won't forget - I'm a note/ calendar guy. If I write it down, I have a much better chance of remembering what I need to get done. Projects, meetings, and activities are all on my calendar. It's beneficial when you're trying to get into a routine.
  • Take care of yourself - Self-care is something everyone needs to focus on. Eating good, healthy meals, getting plenty of sleep, and staying mentally strong are great ways to help get through the stressful days ahead.

I'm not a Doctor or a guidance counselor, but I'm a guy who has been implementing these steps throughout a 30-year career, and I'm just passing along my two cents.
