Timeline of Events
According to Public Information Officer Alex Farkas, officers were called to the couple's home in the 2700 block of Dey Avenue around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 for an assault with a knife.
Farkas says officers arrived to find Brian with an apparent stab wound and applied pressure to the injury until medics arrived, but he refused transport to the hospital for treatment.
Farkas says through the investigation, officers learned that a verbal altercation occurred between the couple in their living room, and as the argument escalated, Chantavia reportedly grabbed a knife and stabbed Brian in the stomach.
Chantavia was arrested and subsequently charged with aggravated assault and battery - bodily injury with a deadly weapon, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
She made her initial appearance in Laramie County Circuit Court on Wednesday, Jan. 22, during which her bond was set at $50,000 cash and her preliminary hearing was scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 30 at 2:30 p.m.
Police say the same day, Brian died as a result of complications from his stab wound.
Chantavia was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and was seen in Circuit Court on the charge the following day, Jan. 23. Her bond and preliminary hearing date were kept the same.
