The snow removal budget for  Bergen County, New Jersey was running low and no end of this winter's snowfall in sight. It seemed a real pickle.

But a salty solution has come from an unlikely place: pickles. City administrators are now using pickle juice to melt ice on roadways. The pickle juice costs $16 per ton, a much better deal than the $63 a ton the county pays for road salt.
