A Rapid City, S.D., man lead Wyoming law enforcement on a 70-mile chase in a stolen vehicle on Interstate 90 before being stopped and arrested Monday, according to a news release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol on Tuesday.

About 5:30 p.m. Monday, a Highway Patrol trooper stopped a sport utility vehicle for speeding on westbound Interstate 90 about 13 miles east of Gillette.

The SUV had no license plates which prompted the trooper to check its Vehicle Identification Number. The check revealed the SUV had been stolen in Rapid City earlier Monday.

Because it was a stolen vehicle, the trooper requested backup.

A Campbell County deputy sheriff came to help take into custody the SUV's occupant, Rapid City resident Nino Montreal, 23.

As the trooper commanded Montreal to exit the SUV, Montreal fled the scene and drove west on I-90 at a high rate of speed.

Sheriff's deputies and the trooper then pursued Montreal.

The first attempt to spike the SUV's failed at mile post 130 because Montreal was able to drive around the spikes.

As the pursuit approached Gillette, the Gillette Police Department blocked all exits into the city.

The second attempt to spike the Jeep at mile post 125 on I-90 also failed because  Montreal was able to drive around the spikes again.

The pursuit continued west reaching speeds of 110 mph.

Additional WHP Troopers and Johnson County Sheriff's Office deputies set up a third tire spike attempt at mile post 73. This time, it worked.

Montreal drove for another mile before stopping after a tire separated from one of the vehicles' rims.

Montreal was arrested and taken to the Campbell County Detention Center in Gillette.

He has been charged with possession of stolen property, eluding and speeding.
