It's a day to celebrate kids, prevent injuries and save lives; the annual Safe Kids Day is coming up Saturday, May 6th in Casper. According to Safe Kids, preventable injuries are the number one killer of kids in the United States and almost every one of these tragedies is avoidable. Safe Kids Day is designed to help prevent these injuries in a fun and educational way.

Safe Kids of Central Wyoming says there will be a number of community partners at the event, including Casper Fire-EMS with fire safety tips, the Casper Police Department, the Natrona County Sheriff's Department with information including gun safety, the Natrona County School District with information about programs families and kids can participate in over the summer, and much more.

One of the key features of Safe Kids Day is providing access to safety helmets, and they'll also have life jackets and carbon monoxide detectors available this year. Helmets are key to preventing injury in a number of sports, from biking to skateboarding. "You just never know when you might lose your balance when you're riding your bike, or you just suddenly stop, so it's just so important to protect your brain, for your life. You need it for everything you do, eating, learning, and just one fall off a small bike and you can hit your head hard on the pavement. It's just so important," says Melissa Schmitz of Safe Kids of Central Wyoming. "You just never know if a car might not see you, it's just one of those things we want to be a no-brainer for kids. I ride my bike, I wear my helmet."

Safe Kids does ask for a donation for the helmet if possible, to help with the cost. Those kids who visit ten booths and turn in their "passport" will be entered into a giveaway for a bike and a Kindle. You'll also find entertainment, juggling, face-painting, and superheroes at the event.

Safe Kids Day will be held at a new location this year, the Boys and Girls Club of Central Wyoming at 1701 E. K St. It's free, and it runs from 10:00 a.m. to noon.
