Significant snowfall is expected over the weekend in the western Wyoming mountains, with over a foot of accumulation possible at elevations above 10,000 feet.

"Snow levels will fluctuate with time with the lowest snow levels over the north," the National Weather Service said Thursday in a special weather statement. "Currently, several inches of snow are possible generally above 8,500 feet."

The special weather statement applies to Yellowstone National Park, the Absaroka Mountains, Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains, Jackson Hole, Wind River Mountains, the Upper Wind River Basin, Star Valley, Salt River and Wyoming Ranges, Upper Green River Basin and foothills, as well as south Lincoln County.

The cities of Jackson, Dubois, Afton, Alpine, Star Valley Ranch, Thayne, Pinedale, La Barge, Big Piney, Farson, Kemmerer and Cokeville are included in the forecast area.

Rain is possible in the western valleys, but it could turn to snow late Sunday before most of the precipitation ends Sunday evening. The precipitation is expected to begin late Friday night, with lulls at times through the weekend.

Between half an inch and an inch of liquid-equivalent precipitation is expected in the area, with isolated pockets seeing up to two inches of liquid-equivalent precipitation.

Campers, hikers, hunters and other backcountry enthusiasts in the mountains should prepare for heavy, wet snow and unseasonably cold temperatures this weekend.
