Victim Notifies Police of Death? Is this Casper Star-Tribune Story Misleading?

The morning of Wednesday, March 27, the city of Casper, Wyoming awoke to news that Natalie Miller, a mother of two, had been killed during the night. Her husband, Thomas Miller, has since been charged with the crime and awaits trial in Casper.

This is not a story about that murder... not directly, anyway.

This is a story about the article published by the Casper Star-Tribune this morning. The article opens with the line, "Natalie Miller was the first to notify police of her death." I don't know why this bugs me so much. I mean, I get what the author is saying - the victim was the first to call police when the altercation, which ultimately led to her death, took place. But, even though I understand the sentence, it still doesn't sitt well with me. When I read this sentence, I imagine a dead person picking up the phone to call the police.

Perhaps something like, "Natalie Miller was the first to notify police that she was under attack," or, 'Natalie Miller was the first to notify police of her impending death," or, "Natalie Miller was the first to call 911 just before dying in her mother's arms," would have been a little less... misleading.
