Wyoming’s Nico Evans Earns His Starting Role [VIDEO]
He’s not boasting or bragging but just humbled his hard work and persistence has paid off, so he can do the job he wants to do for the Wyoming Cowboys.
Senior running back Nico Evans has earned the starting nod for the Pokes in their season opener Saturday night at New Mexico State.
The 5-9, 211 pound native of Los Angeles has been on and off the field over the last couple of seasons. First, as a back-up to Brian Hill, then splitting time with Trey Woods and Kellen Overstreet last year. Evans became the Cowboys’ primary third-down back but never vaulted into the full-time role. After some hard work in the off-season, spring practice, this summer and through fall camp, Evans is in the spot he wanted.
The senior recently visited with KOWB’s David Settle about receiving the starting nod and what he focused on to earn it. Evans also talked about the running back group, the offense in general, their opponent in New Mexico State and more in the video above.
Evans ran 11 times for 31 yards last year. He caught 10 passes for 70 yards and one touchdown. He also helped return kick-offs with one for 29 yards and had four tackles on special teams.
Coach Bohl even admitted in his weekly press conference earlier this week that Nico has been one of the surprises of fall camp in earning the starting job.
The Cowboys take on the Aggies in Las Cruces, NM Saturday at 8 p.m. The game is being televised on ESPN2.
