A Casper man will spend between two and four years behind bars for an assault that left a woman with a brain bleed.

David Lyle Lonebear was handed the prison sentence in Natrona County District Court Tuesday morning after earlier pleading guilty to aggravated assault. He also pleaded guilty to domestic violence, third or subsequent offense.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, police received a report of a man and a woman screaming at each other at a Granite Drive during the evening hours of Sept. 10.

When they arrived, police found a crying woman complaining of a headache. Lonebear quickly told police that the woman fell and everything was fine.

The victim, however, told police that she and Lonebear were arguing when Lonebear pushed her to the floor, causing her to fall backward and hit her head. She didn't recall anything after that except waking up on the floor in pain with Lonebear telling her not to move.

When the victim was taken to Wyoming Medical Center, medical staff discovered she had a brain bleed from hitting her head on the floor. She had memory issues when speaking with emergency room staff.

Assistant District Attorney Ava Bell said in court Tuesday that the victim was left with more than $89,000 in medical bills.

Some of those have been paid through the Wyoming Victims' Compensation Fund.

The sentence is a part of a plea deal reached in earlier hearings. District Court Judge Kerri M. Johnson said Lonebear's conduct caused severe damage to the victim.

"To be honest, you are quite fortunate that you're only serving two to four years," Johnson said.

Lonebear has three prior domestic violence convictions, all in Fremont County.
