A motorcyclist is dead after hitting a large animal on Interstate 80 and being thrown from his bike.

Daniel Godfrey, 37, of Oklahoma, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to a report from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

Godfrey was riding a Harley Davidson eastbound on Interstate 80 shortly after 10:30 p.m. Saturday when, near milepost 194 in Sweetwater County, he hit a large animal. State troopers believe Godfrey collided with an elk or moose.

Godfrey lost control of the bike and left the roadway to the right before being thrown from the motorcycle. He died at the scene.

Weather was clear and the road surface was dry at the time of the crash, according to the Patrol's report.
