If you happened to be looking up in the sky over the weekend, you might have been able to see the aurora borealis over Casper. It is a rarity that the dancing green lights appear this far south. Thankfully someone had their eyes in the skies to capture this stellar event.

Evan Dolajak uploaded this video to YouTube of the northern lights over Casper on March 17th, 2018 at 4:30 am. It was originally a time-lapse video, but he then slowed the images to its present state.

NorthernLightsCenter.com talks talks about the science behind the aurora borealis. The northern lights happen when charged particles enter the earth's atmosphere. These particles usually come from the sun. The phenomenon occurs more frequently in the Northern hemisphere of the planet hence the name. NorthernLightsCenter.com writes:

Variations in [color] are due to the type of gas particles that are colliding. The most common auroral color, a pale yellowish-green, is produced by oxygen molecules located about 60 miles above the earth.
