A boy had to be taken by lifeflight to a hospital over the weekend after his leg got caught in a boat propeller while he was with family at Alcova.

The boy was with a group of family and friends taking off from Cottonwood Beach between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday, says Janet Milek of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

The group was headed for Cottonwood Island, which is some 100 yards from the shore. A number of children, including the boy, were wearing lifejackets and bobbing around in the water near the boat when the boy's leg became caught in the propeller.

After the injury, the boy was taken by lifeflight to a hospital. The injuries at this point are apparently not life-threatening.

"It sounds like things are going well for him," Milek said Monday afternoon.

Milek says everyone in the group was wearing lifejackets and alcohol was not involved. Despite safety precautions, accidents still happen.

"These things happen quickly, they happen easily, and we want to be diligent in our safety," Milek added.

Milek cautions boaters, and anyone headed out to enjoy the water this summer, to be aware of their surroundings and nearby hazards.
