Casper Police Warn of Another New Scam
The Casper Police Department has been made aware of yet a new scam making the rounds. This one targets people on their job, and is pretty creative.
Here is the official release.
CPD has been made aware of a new scam that has occurred at multiple businesses in our community. An employee gets a phone call from a person saying they are from the corporate office. The person says that the business is under investigation for someone stealing money from the business. The employee is told they need to cooperate with the investigation, or they will be charged with a felony.
The employee is requested to take money out of the safe and go and buy a pre-paid gift card with the money. Once they have done this, they are to give the person from corporate the numbers off the pre-paid card, and then destroy it. The employee is then told that someone from corporate will be showing up in the next few days to clear up the missing money from the safe.
Please share this scam with anyone who works in the retail or restaurant business. Scams are usually outside of the CPD's jurisdiction, and we are unable to help in theses scams. If you believe you have been a victim of a scam, please go to the Federal Trade Commission website HERE and report the scam.
Now, it's understandable that getting what purports to be a call from company superiors can leave one flustered, and not as suspicious as they might otherwise be. But this particular scam has already claimed one victim in Casper, so be alert.
