The Douglas Police Department have warned residents of a new phone scam that involves a recorded message that impersonates an officer.

In 2013, Layton told sympathetic Casper residents that her son, nicknamed "Ninja Dorian," had terminal brain cancer and she needed money for his treatment.

This one targets people on their job, and is pretty creative.

If someone calls you asking for personal information, hang up.

"Spoofing" is a technique often used by scammers to trick people into believing they are receiving a legitimate call from a legitimate source.

If you still have concerns about the legitimacy of a call, you can call the company's published 24-hour, toll-free customer service number, 1-888-221-7070.

Individuals call county residents, identify themselves as current sheriff's deputies, tell them missed jury duty, and have active warrants for their arrest.

Skimmers can go undetected in normal use, and are rarely spotted by a casual glance.

The department says anyone who receives an unscheduled call from a caller who asks for personal information should immediately call their caseworker to report the call.

Scam artists have software that can make any number come up on caller ID to help persuade potential victims to fall for the scam.

It's a particularly lucrative scam, Hatcher said, which has been around for roughly the past decade.
