Winter Storm Warning for Douglas, Glenrock; 7-12 Inches of Snow Likely

Much of eastern Wyoming is under a winter storm warning as a major weather system approaches, with significant snow accumulation expected in some areas.

The National Weather System has issued winter storm warnings and watches, largely set to go into effect at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Converse and Niobrara Counties are expected to see seven to 12 inches of snow accumulation, with heavy snowfall likely. For those areas, including Douglas and Glenrock, the winter storm warning is set to expire at 12 p.m. Thursday.

for Gillette, Wright, Moorcroft, Hulett, Newcastle and Upton, the NWS expects six to nine inches of snow with winds gusting up to 35 mph. That winter storm warning is set to expire at 6 a.m. Thursday.

Sheridan, Dayton, Ranchester, and Big Horn will likely see four to eight inches of heavy, wet snow. However, Story could see a foot or more. In those areas, wind gusts could get up to 35 mph, creating blowing and drifting snow.

Stockgrowers in the area are encouraged to protect young livestock if possible.

In the northeastern Big Horn Mountains near Burgess Junction, roughly a foot of snow accumulation is expected. Wind gusts are also expected to create blowing and drifting snow in the area.

Wyoming's southwestern corner, including Evanston, could see four to 10 inches of snow accumulation. But the northern slopes of the Uinta Mountains are expected to see 10-16 inches of snow with wind gusts up to 45 mph.

Southeastern Wyoming including Cheyenne, Wheatland, Guernsey, Torrington, Buford and Pine Bluffs is expected to see five to eight inches of snow with wind gusts up to 40 mph.

All of the areas under winter storm warnings will likely see severe winter weather conditions with travel becoming very hazardous or impossible.

The NWS reminds people who must travel to keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicles in case of emergency.

Blizzard warnings have been posted for parts of the Nebraska Panhandle, with whiteout conditions expected in some areas.

And while all or parts of 11 Wyoming counties are under winter storm warnings, parts of nine counties remain under a winter storm watch. Parts of six counties are under a winter weather advisory.
